Some reports may indicate that South Africa will find it increasingly hard to compete on the international outsourcing map against powerhouses like South-East Asia, China and India, but local software development factory, UCS Software Manufacturing (UCSSM) believes that the country has “pockets of excellence to offer” where other countries will battle to compete.

Specialised outsource software developer, UCS Software Manufacturing (UCSSM), has announced that ARgility's Microsoft-based ActiveRetail software has officially been rolled out at 33 branches within the UK-based homeware retailer, The Pier. With its head office based in Abingdon, near Oxford, The Pier boasts a total of 36 stores situated throughout the UK.

There has been talk of the emergence of software factories for some time now, but it has only been the last few years that they have come to the fore on a commercial level. Certainly, if we are to keep pace with the demand for software development over the next decade, the software factory approach is going to have to be more universally adopted – and will need to be the de facto standard of handling software development, said Eric van Heerden, business development manager at UCS Software Manufacturing (UCSSM), the retail-focused software factory in the JSE securities exchange listed UCS Group Ltd.
